Breathing for Metaphors / 2011

This piece is dedicated to Merrilee Edgar and Peter Matussek. They focused me on my breathing, and the breathing of the Simultaneous Opposites Engine. This breathing, the duration and physicality of which is itself a focus of this video, is also of course a metaphor, one that is accepted through our implicit empathy for all objects. In an inversion: these metaphors are the intentions of Man, they are how we understand the meaning of the world, and how we know "what it's like outside".

In 1966, the Syrian government's Ministry of Endowments solicited plans for a building to replace a 14th-century Mamluk mosque in Martyr's Square in the center of Damascus. A young architect proposed a design for a 5-star hotel and new mosque. In 1971, his plans were scrapped. In 1982, a building began to be built. Hospital? Parking garage? Military housing? The project--now called the Basel al-Asad Center--has been the subject of much rumor and speculation. As of 2007, the building remains unfinished. In this documentary video, an architect recounts the chronicle of the building and considers its possible future.

It Takes Your Breath Away / 1964

The effect on the lungs of living in a polluted atmosphere is briefly shown on pathological specimens. Two patients are seen, one of whom had to change his job on account of reduced respiratory capacity due to bronchitis. This film uses very evocative footage of polluted city centres and inner city housing, showing widespread burning of fossil fuels in industry and the home, as well as a hospital. The result is smutty deposits over everything. Comparisons are made between Social Class 1, who can afford to live in the clean suburbs and Social Class 5, who fall victim to respiratory disease through constant exposure to pollution.

It documents the excessive development of natural resources in Hanam, resulting in serious pollutions, loss of biodiversity and catastrophic consequences for its culture and inhabitants.
