The Breath Courses Through Us / 2013

The Breath Courses Through Us is a documentary about the New York Art Quartet, a pioneering 'free jazz' group from 1964-65. The film revolves around their reunion after 35 years, a private dinner together and a concert in New York City. This lyrically edited film, enveloped ion their music, looks back at their formative years, history, musical ideas, and presents a picture of who there men are today. John Tchicai (saxophone), Roswell Rudd (trombone), Milford Graves (drums), Reggie Workman (bass) are joined by poet Amiri Baraka. There are few films on jazz with such an intimate look at musicians, and fewer films that focus on this period and genre in jazz music.

Cairo in One Breath / 2015

After 60 generations, thousands of individual muezzins - those who recite the Muslim call for prayer - stand to be replaced by a single voice broadcast from a radio station. CAIRO IN ONE BREATH follows five muezzins as this Adhan Unification Project takes hold and as Egypt undergoes Revolution and regime change. The story follows five muezzins from when they first heard rumors of plans to install wireless receivers in Cairo's 4,000 officially recognized mosques, through implementation of this Adhan Unification Project (AUP), which since 2010 has displaced thousands. Now, most mosques have receivers installed, though political changes have halted inspection and maintenance. Former muezzins who now perform other duties at mosques, recite the adhan when receivers (all-to-frequently) fail.

This uncensored glimpse inside December's Million March NYC imparts raw interviews and footage to deliver a realistic perspective of why the marchers passionately became involved. P.S. I Can't Breathe encourages the observer to digest information regarding the #BlackLivesMatter hash-tag and understand the youth's perspective on the topic while taking a deeper look into aftermath or Post Script of hope lost and shattered dreams when justice is not equal for everyone.

Deep breath / 2019

Sometimes, the finding of an antidote to the most basic and lethal form of amnesia, ‘the forgetting of air’, may require the undertaking of a deep dive. The site of descent is what it’s really all about, isn’t it? Where and when to dive into the thick of things? Somewhere in the depths where the Saronic Gulf meets the Aegean Sea, Raqs Media Collective are marking a fragment of an aphorism that has to do with forgetting. The phrase that Raqs inscribes on to the sea floor and then films with the help of three divers, sign-posts an interval between the resting place of two shipwrecks; one ancient, another not. Together they might have transported a cargo of all the old and new things that defy memory, had they kept sailing. This submarine aide-memoire is as much about what it means to remember to breathe as it is about the forgetting of the fabric of life. It makes for the first underwater art work by Raqs Media Collective, and leaves a submarine epiphany in its wake.

The Last Breath of Sam Yan / 2023

In June 2020, there was an order from Property Management of Chulalongkorn University (PMCU) to relocate the Mazu Shrine (Saphan Lueang, Bangkok) to build tall buildings instead, including suing the administrator of the shrine for 4.6 billion baht. It led to the hashtag #saveChaoMaeThapthimShrine and a movement to protect the last breath of the historic area by neighborhood residents and students.

Artist Katherine Bauer recites her recipe for Crystallum, her playfully witchy process of growing crystals on the carcass of her deceased feline friend, Pickles. Bauer also quotes "The Torture Garden," the 19th Century French novel by Octave Mirbeau, accompanied by the dirge of heavy rock music. Serra's passion for finding cinematic beauty in the absurd and humor in provocation make her work charming, singular and visceral.
